The geoid is that equipotential surface which would coincide with the mean ocean surface of the Earth, if the oceans and atmosphere were in equilibrium, at rest relative to the rotating Earth, and extended through the continents (such as with very narrow canals). According to C.F. Gauss, who first described it, it is the "mathematical figure of the Earth", a smooth but highly irregular surface that corresponds not to the actual surface of the Earth's crust, but to a surface which can only be known through extensive gravitational measurements and calculations. Despite being an important concept for almost two hundred years in the history of geodesy and geophysics, it has only been defined to high precision in recent decades, for instance by works of Petr Vanícek and others. It is often described as the true physical figure of the Earth, in contrast to the idealized geometrical figure of a reference ellipsoid.

Das Geoid ist eine Bezugsfläche im Schwerefeld der Erde zur Vermessung und Beschreibung der Erdfigur. In guter Näherung wird das Geoid durch den mittleren Meeresspiegel der Weltmeere repräsentiert und ist damit in seiner Form außerhalb der Landmassen sichtbar. Das Potenzial der Erdschwere ist an jedem Ort der Geoidfläche gleich. Die natürliche Lotrichtung und das Geoid stehen in jedem Punkt senkrecht zueinander. Daher kann das Geoid durch Messung der Schwerkraft bestimmt werden. Zwei beliebige Punkte auf dem Geoid haben das gleiche Schwerepotential und deshalb die gleiche dynamische Höhe. Die Schwerebeschleunigung g ist hingegen auf dem Geoid nicht konstant, sondern sinkt vom Pol zum Äquator von 9,83 auf 9,78 m/s².

Un géoïde est une représentation de la surface terrestre plus précise que l'approximation sphérique ou ellipsoïdale. Il correspond à une équipotentielle (dans le champ de gravité terrestre) et est défini de manière à coller au plus près à la « surface réelle ».

En geoid (av grekiska: geo, jord och eides, liknande) är en kropp med en yta som ungefär sammanfaller med havsytans genomsnittliga nivå. Den sägs ofta vara en nära återgivning eller fysisk modell av jordens äkta form och enligt Carl Friedrich Gauss är geoiden en "matematisk bild av jorden" eller, egentligen, av dess gravitationsfält. Geodeter kan beräkna höjden hos punkter på kontinenterna ovanför denna tänkta men fysiskt definierade yta genom en teknik som kallas avvägning.

Geoida - bryła, której powierzchnia w każdym miejscu jest prostopadła do pionu wyznaczonego przez siłę ciężkości. Geoida jest teoretyczną powierzchnią, na której potencjał siły ciężkości Ziemi jest stały, równy potencjałowi siły ciężkości na średnim poziomie mórz otwartych i przedłużoną umownie pod powierzchnią lądów. Ponieważ zawiera ona lustro wody w morzach i oceanach dodatkowo określana jest jako Geoida Zerowa. Jako powierzchnia ekwipotencjalna, geoida w każdym swym punkcie jest prostopadła do kierunku siły ciężkości (pionu).
