Gens Cornelia

Cornelius (fem. Cornelia, plural Cornelii) was the nomen of the patrician gens Cornelia, one of the most important families of Ancient Rome. The origins of the family are unknown, but it may have been Etruscan in origin and, as such, late-comers to the Roman patriciate.The family was a relatively young one among patricians, only attaining the consulship in 485 BC, but it rapidly rose to the top, and began to contest for consulships with the Fabii and the Valerii from the 3rd century BC. Over thirty percent of all consulships were held by men from this gens; several great commanders also came from this prominent family.

Cornelius (fem. Cornelia) era il nomen della gens Cornelia, famiglia patrizia tra le più importanti dell'antica Roma, ricompresa nelle cento gentes originarie ricordate dallo storico Tito Livio.Secondo l'illustre studioso Theodor Mommsen l'antichità della gens Cornelia si desume dal fatto che essa diede il nome ad una delle più antiche Tribù Rustiche, che comprendeva Arpino, Nomento, Eclano, Erdonia, Teano, Apulo, Crotone, Petelia, Camerino Fulginio in Umbria e Matelica. I Cornelii Avevano propri culti e tradizioni, e si distinguevano da tutte le altre famiglie per la pratica dell'inumazione dei defunti, in alternativa alla più diffusa cremazione. Famoso è il monumentale Sepolcro degli Scipioni sulla Via Appia Antica.
