Gemara

The Gemara (also Gemora) ('גמרא' - from gamar: Aramaic "[to] study") is the part of the Talmud that contains rabbinical commentaries and analysis of its predecessor, the Mishnah. After this core text was finalized by Rabbi Judah the Prince (c. 200 AD), it was studied exhaustively by generation after generation of rabbis in Babylonia and the Land of Israel. Their discussions were written down in the series of books that became the Gemara, which when combined with the Mishnah completes the Talmud.

Gemara hebr. גמרא to aramejskojęzyczny zbiór rabinicznych komentarzy i objaśnień uzupełniających Misznę, czyli kodeks prawa obyczajowego w judaizmie. Obie księgi tworzą razem Talmud. Z tego względu, że Gemara była równolegle tworzona w Jerozolimie i Babilonii istnieją dwie wersje Talmudu - babilońska i palestyńska.
