"Gaesa" redirects here. For the heavy metal band, see Geasa (band) A geas (pronounced //, plural geasan) has two interpretations in Gaelic mythology and folklore. First, it is a vow or obligation placed upon a person (usually a hero, such as Cuchulainn in Irish mythology). Traditionally, the doom of the hero comes about due to their violation of such geasan, either by accident, or by having multiple geasan and then being placed in a position where they have no option but to violate one geas in order to maintain another.

Dans la mythologie celtique irlandaise, la Geis (pluriel : geasa) est une incantation magique prononcée par le druide (le file en Irlande). Si le mot n’a pas de traduction littérale, il a le sens d’obligation et d’interdit, la référence au tabou n’est pas pertinente car ce n’est pas une notion indo-européenne. Basée sur le pouvoir du Verbe, elle obligatoirement orale.

Geasa to w mitologii celtyckiej złożona przez osobę, przeważnie bohatera takiego jak Cuchulainn, przysięga, lub nałożony nań obowiązek. Według tradycji, złamanie geasa (zwykle przez przypadek) sprowadzało na niego zły los. Istnieje duże podobieństwo pomiędzy pojęciem geasa, które należy wyłącznie do mitologii irlandzkiej, a typową dla mitologii walijskiej przepowiednią śmierci bohatera, co zresztą nie powinno dziwić, biorąc pod uwagę wspólne i bardzo bliskie pochodzenie wszystkich odłamów mitologii celtyckiej. Geasa to również nazwa grupy grającej celtic metal - zob. Geasa (grupa muz.).
