Ge'ez

Ge'ez (ግዕዝ, , ; also transliterated Gi'iz, and referred to as Ethiopic) is an ancient South Semitic language that had developed in the current region of Eritrea and northern Ethiopia in the Horn of Africa, as the language of the peasantry. It later became the official language of the Kingdom of Aksum and Ethiopian imperial court.

Ge'ez (auch Geez, Aksumitisch oder Altäthiopisch) war die Sprache des spätantiken Reiches von Aksum und war auch lange darüber hinaus bis ins 19. Jahrhundert die Hauptschriftsprache in Äthiopien. Heute ist sie die Kirchensprache der äthiopischen und eritreischen orthodoxen Kirchen.

Il ge'ez (o geez, propriamente gə'əz) è una lingua semitica, oggi estinta, parlata nell'Impero d'Etiopia fino al XIV secolo.Con una certa approssimazione si potrebbe dire che essa è per l'amarico, idioma ufficiale dell'odierna Etiopia, ciò che il latino rappresenta per l'italiano (in realtà i linguisti rilevano che non si può trattare di filiazione diretta dal ge'ez all'amarico come dal latino all'italiano). Attualmente non è più usata, se non come lingua liturgica della Chiesa ortodossa copta (di rito etiopico e di rito eritreo), e della comunità Beta Israel ("falascià"), nonché dalla Chiesa cattolica etiope.
