Gaul was the name given, in ancient times, to the region of Western Europe comprising present-day northern Italy, France, Belgium, western Switzerland and the parts of the Netherlands and Germany on the west bank of the Rhine river. In English, the word Gaul may also refer to a Celtic inhabitant of that region, although the expression may be used more generally for all ancient speakers of the Gaulish language (a derivative of early Celtic) who were widespread in Europe and extended even into central Anatolia by Roman times. In this way, "Gaul" and "Celt" are sometimes used interchangeably.

Als Gallia (Gallien) bezeichneten die Römer den Raum, der überwiegend von Kelten (lat. Galli) besiedelt war. Caesar nennt daneben Belger und Aquitanier (Belgae und Aquitani), wobei er Ligurer und Iberer nicht nennt, weil sie im bereits römischen Teil Galliens lebten. Gall oder Gal ist auch eine alte Bezeichnung für Schrei, Hall oder lauter scharfer Klang.

Galia (łac. Gallia) - kraina historyczna w Europie Zachodniej, obecnie tereny Francji, Belgii i północnych Włoch, zamieszkana przez plemiona celtyckie. Termin ten, wprowadzony przez Rzymian, do czasu podboju przez Juliusza Cezara w latach 58 - 51 p.n.e. nie miał pokrycia w rzeczywistej organizacji państwowej czy międzyplemiennej. Istniały tylko pewne luźne podobieństwa kulturowe i niezbyt intensywne związki ekonomiczne między poszczególnymi plemionami.

La Gallia era, secondo la nomenclautra geografica dell'età antica, la terra dei Galli, termine che identificava, nel lessico latino, un ampio insieme di popolazioni celtiche continentali. Corrispondeva a un'ampia regione dell'Europa centro-occidentale, delimitata a nord dalla Manica, a sud dal Mar Mediterraneo e dal fiume Rubicone, a ovest dall'Oceano Atlantico e a est dal fiume Reno e dalle Alpi Giulie. Corrispondeva quindi grossomodo all'area degli odierni Belgio, Lussemburgo, Germania occidentale, Francia, Svizzera e Italia settentrionale.
