Rino was at the centre of a heated debate when, following the Bosman ruling, he was plucked from Perugia´s nursery team aged seventeen and went off to Scotland with a contract worth several hundred million lira a year. Perugia’s president, Gaucci, had refused to offer him professional terms. His time in Scottish football helped his development on and off the park. The Scottish supporters rechristened him "Braveheart" on account of the grit and tenacity which are the hallmarks of his game. In Salerno they saddled him with a different label instead, that of "The White Davids".
