Gas Guzzler Tax

Originates from the 1978 Energy Tax Act (Public Law 95418). A new car purchaser is required to pay the tax if the car purchased has a combined city/highway fuel economy rating that is below the standard for that year. For model years 1986 and later, the standard is 22.5 mpg. (DOE6)
