Garbage est un groupe de rock international (chanteuse écossaise et musiciens américains) aux résonances pop et électro particulières et aux allures parfois rétro ou kitsch, ce qui lui donne un style unique et difficile à définir, souvent qualifié de rock alternatif ou encore de new wave. Un magazine culturel a même évoqué l'idée de « cyber-pop », clin d'œil à la passion que voue le groupe aux nouvelles technologies, particulièrement en matière de création musicale.

Garbage ist eine internationale Rockgruppe.Garbage besteht aus dem Schlagzeuger Butch Vig, dem Gitarristen und Keyboarder Duke Erikson, dem Gitarristen Steve Marker und der Sängerin Shirley Manson. Zusätzlich wird die Gruppe seit ihrem zweiten Album (1998) von dem Bassisten Daniel Shulman begleitet, der jedoch kein offizielles Mitglied ist.

Garbage to amerykańska grupa rockowa zaliczana do gatunku alternatywny rock. W swojej twórczości muzycy korzystają z szerokiej gamy instrumentów - od gitar elektrycznych po próbki dźwiękowe z utworów innych wykonawców. W ich dorobku znajdziemy utwory żywe i pobudzające, ale też spokojne, poetyckie ballady. Elementy charakterystyczne dla Garbage to, między innymi, wplatanie w melodię elementów z innych niż rock stylów muzycznych, używanie próbek dźwiękowych z różnymi szumami i trzaskami, czy elektroniczne modyfikowanie głosu wokalistki. Grupa powstała w roku 1994.

I Garbage (in italiano spazzatura) sono un gruppo internazionale di musica rock, creato a Madison, Wisconsin nel 1994. È composto da Butch Vig, Steve Marker, Duke Erikson, e Shirley Manson.Attualmente la band ha deciso di prendere una pausa dallo stressante ciclo "registrazione disco/tour promozionale". In un messaggio apparso sul loro sito ufficiale il 23 settembre 2005, dichiarano di non essersi sciolti, ma solo di voler passare più tempo con le proprie famiglie. A giugno 2007 è uscito il primo greatest hits intitolato Absolute Garbage, contenente l'inedito "Tell Me Where It Hurts".
