Gaijin

This article is about the Japanese word for "foreigner." For the James Clavell novel, see Gai-Jin (novel). or are Japanese words meaning "foreigner." The words can refer to nationality or ethnicity. The word is often the subject of debate as to its appropriateness, particularly in its shortened form. The word gaikokujin (外国人) is composed of gaikoku (外国, foreign country) and hito/jin (人, person), so the word literally means "foreign person." Gaijin (外人) is a common abbreviation of gaikokujin.

et sont des termes japonais utilisés pour désigner les étrangers au Japon. Les deux termes ont une légère différence de connotation. Le terme gaijin est souvent utilisé pour désigner uniquement les étrangers blancs alors que le terme gaikokujin est utilisé pour décrire toute personne non ethniquement japonaise, y compris originaire de Corée ou de Chine. Gaijin (外人 - gaijin) significa letteralmente "persona esterna", cioè colui che non è nativo, non è del luogo. Con questo termine vengono indicati dai giapponesi gli stranieri: Gaijin ha una connotazione un po' più dura e talvolta velatamente razzista, rispetto al termine più neutro ed ufficiale Gaikokujin (外国人 - gaikokujin), che vuol dire appunto "persona straniera".
