A Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point, abbreviated GSSP, is an internationally agreed upon stratigraphic section which serves as the reference section for a particular boundary on the geologic time scale. The effort to define GSSPs is conducted by the International Commission on Stratigraphy, a part of the International Union of Geological Sciences. Most, but not all, GSSPs are based on paleontological changes. Hence GSSPs are usually described in terms of transitions between different faunal stages, though far more faunal stages have been described than GSSPs. The GSSP definition effort commenced in 1977. As of 2004, 45 of the 96 GSSPs required have been approved.

Ein GSSP (engl. Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point = „Profil und Punkt eines weltweiten Grenz-Stratotyps“) ist ein geologischer Aufschluss, in dem die Basis einer der weltweit gültigen Einheiten der Chronostratigraphie festgelegt ist. Diese Basis wird in ihrer Lage exakt definiert (Point) und ist der Referenzpunkt (Typlokalität) für die Festlegung der jeweiligen chronostratigraphischen Einheit. Zusätzlich wird das geologische Profil des Aufschlusses bis ins Detail geologisch untersucht und beschrieben. Die Festlegung der GSSPs geschieht durch die International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS), einer Unterorganisation der International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS).

Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) är en global referenspunkt som används inom stratigrafin för att definiera gränsen mellan två olika geologiska tidsperioder. En GSSP kan bara ratificeras av arbetsgrupper inom den Internationella kommissionen för stratigrafi ICS (International Commission on Stratigraphy).

I Global boundary Stratigraphic Section and Point (abbreviati in GSSP) sono località mondiali in cui siano registrate il maggior numero di informazioni fisiche, chimiche e paleontologiche su un limite tra due ere geologiche e dove tale limite sia fisicamente presente. Nella letteratura scientifica italiana i GSSP sono definiti da due termini, il primo, stratotipo, indica la successione litologica che caratterizza l'intervallo geologico che contiene il limite tra due ere; il secondo, chiodo d'oro, rappresenta invece il limite fisico tra due ere ed è il piano tra due strati che mette in contatto rocce di un'età con rocce dell'altra età. Le località che vengono definite GSSP sono il punto di riferimento mondiale e devono essere prese in considerazione in qualsiasi caso si renda necessario valutare se una determinata roccia appartiene a un determinato intervallo geologico. La stratigrafia è la disciplina che si occupa di correlare i GSSP alle varie unità litologiche presenti nel mondo. La definizione dei GSSP è cominciata nel 1977 ed è tuttora in corso.

Een golden spike (Engels voor gouden spijker) of Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (afgekort GSSP) is een typelocatie in de vorm van een geologische ontsluiting waar het stratotype van een grens tussen twee chronostratigrafische eenheden dagzoomt. Tijdperken uit de geochronologie worden gedefinieerd door datering van internationaal vastgestelde GSSP's. Met de GSSP van een bepaalde chronostratigrafische eenheid wordt altijd de basis bedoeld, de top van een eenheid is de GSSP van de erop liggende eenheid.
