GNU is a Unix-like computer operating system developed by the GNU Project, ultimately aiming to be a "complete Unix-compatible software system" composed wholly of free software. Development of GNU was initiated by Richard Stallman in 1983 and was the original focus of the Free Software Foundation (FSF). The latest alpha release of the GNU system is GNU 0.401, released on 1 April 2011, featuring GNU Hurd as the system's kernel. Other (non-GNU) kernels, most famously the Linux kernel, can also be used with GNU. The FSF maintains that Linux, when used with GNU tools and utilities, should be considered a variant of GNU, and promotes the term GNU/Linux for such systems, (leading to the GNU/Linux naming controversy).

DotGNU is a part of the GNU Project that aims to provide a free software replacement for Microsoft's .NET Framework by Free Software Foundation. Other goals of the project are better support for non-Windows platforms and support for more processors.

The wildebeest (plural wildebeest or wildebeests), also called the gnu ( or ) is an antelope of the genus Connochaetes. It is a hooved (ungulate) mammal. Wildebeest is Dutch for "wild beast" or "wild cattle" in Afrikaans (beest = cattle), while Connochaetes derives from the Greek words konnos ("beard") and khaite ("flowing hair"). The name "gnu" originates from the Khoikhoi name for these animals, "gnou".

Das DotGNU-Projekt war ein Open-Source-Projekt aus dem Bereich der Software-Entwicklung. Das Projekt wollte eine alternative Grundlage für die Erstellung von Webservices und von C#-Applikationen bilden, die im Rahmen des .NET-Frameworks programmiert werden. Vorbild war dabei der Erfolg von GNU/Linux als Lizenzmodell für Hersteller-unabhängige Software.

Gnus sind afrikanische Antilopen, die in großen Herden leben und zur Gruppe der Kuhantilopen gehören. Zu dieser Gattung zählen zwei Arten:

• Streifengnu (Connochaetes taurinus), Ost- und Südafrika
• Weißschwanzgnu (Connochaetes gnou), zentrales und östliches Südafrika

Gnus ist ein vom norwegischen Programmierer Lars Magne Ingebrigtsen neu ins Leben gerufener E-Mail- und Newsreader, der unter Gnu Emacs und XEmacs läuft.

Gnuer (Connochaetes) (även gnuantiloper) är flocklevande hovdjur av antiloptyp, oftast klassificerade inom underfamiljen gräsätande antiloper. De lever i södra och östra Afrika, i stora flockar som ofta kan innehålla över 1 000 djur.
