GNU
GNU is a Unix-like computer operating system developed by the GNU Project, ultimately aiming to be a "complete Unix-compatible software system" composed wholly of free software. Development of GNU was initiated by Richard Stallman in 1983 and was the original focus of the Free Software Foundation (FSF). The latest alpha release of the GNU system is GNU 0.401, released on 1 April 2011, featuring GNU Hurd as the system's kernel. Other (non-GNU) kernels, most famously the Linux kernel, can also be used with GNU. The FSF maintains that Linux, when used with GNU tools and utilities, should be considered a variant of GNU, and promotes the term GNU/Linux for such systems, (leading to the GNU/Linux naming controversy).

Linux ( or ) is a Unix-like computer operating system assembled under the model of free and open source software development and distribution. The defining component of Linux is the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released 5 October 1991 by Linus Torvalds.

Wildebeest
The wildebeest (plural wildebeest or wildebeests), also called the gnu ( or ) is an antelope of the genus Connochaetes. It is a hooved (ungulate) mammal. Wildebeest is Dutch for "wild beast" or "wild cattle" in Afrikaans (beest = cattle), while Connochaetes derives from the Greek words konnos ("beard") and khaite ("flowing hair"). The name "gnu" originates from the Khoikhoi name for these animals, "gnou".

GNU
GNU (dt. und engl. [], ) ist das im Rahmen des GNU-Projekts in Entwicklung befindliche, vollständig freie Betriebssystem. Die Bezeichnung ist ein rekursives Akronym von GNU’s Not Unix. Es wird mit dem Ziel entwickelt, eine vollständig freie Alternative für Unix zu bieten, und steht unter der GNU General Public License (GPL). GNU ist POSIX-kompatibel. Es besteht aus dem Mach Microkernel, den Services GNU Hurd und der weiteren Software des GNU-Projekts.

Gnus sind afrikanische Antilopen, die in großen Herden leben und zur Gruppe der Kuhantilopen gehören. Zu dieser Gattung zählen zwei Arten:
- Streifengnu (Connochaetes taurinus), Ost- und Südafrika
- Weißschwanzgnu (Connochaetes gnou), zentrales und östliches Südafrika

Linux
Als Linux (dt. []) oder GNU/Linux (siehe GNU/Linux-Namensstreit) werden in der Regel freie, portable, Unix-ähnliche Mehrbenutzer-Betriebssysteme bezeichnet, die auf dem Linux-Kernel und wesentlich auf GNU-Software basieren. Die weite, auch kommerzielle Verbreitung ermöglichte ab 1992 die Lizenzierung des Linux-Kernels unter der GPL.

GNU-projektet startades 1984 av Richard Stallman med målet att utveckla ett komplett Unix-liknande operativsystem bestående helt av fri programvara: operativsystemet GNU. GNU är en rekursiv akronym av engelskans GNU's Not Unix!, på svenska GNU är inte Unix!.

GNU/Linux - tym mianem określa się często uniksopodobny system GNU z jądrem Linux. Korzysta on z monolitycznego jądra Linux, gdyż mikrojądro GNU Hurd tworzone przez GNU jest wciąż w fazie rozwojowej. Kontrowersje związane z nazwą systemu operacyjnego opartego o jądro Linux i m.in. oprogramowanie GNU powstały gdy Richard Stallman, założyciel Free Software Foundation i projektu GNU zaczął promować nazwę "GNU/Linux". Podkreśla ona duży wkład tego projektu dla większości istniejących dystrybucji Linuksa (np. kompilatory, biblioteki, parsery). Z kolei przeciwnicy tego podejścia przypominają, że w przeciętnej dystrybucji jest też wiele oprogramowania powstałego w innych, niezależnych od FSF, projektach (np. środowisko graficzne KDE). Proponują oni aby kompletny system operacyjny nazywać po prostu "Linux".

(wymowa ) to uniksopodobny system operacyjny złożony wyłącznie z wolnego oprogramowania. Jego nazwa to rekurencyjny akronim od słów GNU's Not Unix (ang. GNU to Nie Unix). GNU zapoczątkowany został przez Richarda Stallmana i był pierwszym projektem Fundacji Wolnego Oprogramowania (ang. Free Software Foundation, FSF).

Linux
Linux jest uniksopodobnym systemem operacyjnym. Linux jest jednym ze znamiennych przykładów wolnego i otwartego oprogramowania (FLOSS); będący jego bazą kod źródłowy może być dowolnie wykorzystywany, modyfikowany i rozpowszechniany.
Pierwsza wersja jądra Linuksa została udostępniona publicznie 17 września 1991 dla architektury komputera PC, wykorzystującej mikroprocesor o mikroarchitekturze IA-32. Do jądra dołączono narzędzia systemowe i biblioteki z projektu GNU aby otrzymać nadający się do użytku system operacyjny. Z tego powodu powstała też alternatywna nazwa kompletnego systemu: GNU/Linux. Obecnie jest on udostępniany w formie licznych dystrybucji Linuksa, które składają się z jądra (niekiedy zmodyfikowanego w stosunku do oficjalnej wersji) i zestawu pakietów oprogramowania dobranego do różnorodnych wymagań.
