Graphics Interchange Format
The Graphics Interchange Format (GIF; or ) is a bitmap image format that was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and has since come into widespread usage on the World Wide Web due to its wide support and portability. The format supports up to 8 bits per pixel thus allowing a single image to reference a palette of up to 256 distinct colors. The colors are chosen from the 24-bit RGB color space. It also supports animations and allows a separate palette of 256 colors for each frame. The color limitation makes the GIF format unsuitable for reproducing color photographs and other images with continuous color, but it is well-suited for simpler images such as graphics or logos with solid areas of color.

Graphics Interchange Format
GIF ([] oder []) für Graphics Interchange Format (engl. Grafikaustausch-Format) ist ein Grafikformat mit guter verlustfreier Komprimierung für Bilder mit geringer Farbtiefe (bis zu 256 (
) verschiedene Farben pro Einzelbild). Darüber hinaus können mehrere Einzelbilder in einer Datei abgespeichert werden, die von geeigneten Betrachtungsprogrammen wie Webbrowsern als Animationen interpretiert werden. Ein heute nicht mehr gebräuchlicher Name des Formates ist GIFF (Graphics Interchange File Format).

GIF
GIF ("Graphics Interchange Format") är en standard för icke-förstörande komprimering av bilder, speciellt populär på webben, inte minst för att den ger möjlighet till skapa enkla animationer. GIF ger, i sammanhanget, god kompression på bilder med stora enfärgade ytor. GIF ger försumbar kompression på exempelvis fotografiska bilder, där format som JPEG är lämpligare. Eftersom en GIF-bild dessutom endast kan innehålla 256 färger, kan inte allt grafiskt material publiceras som GIF-bilder utan en drastisk sänkning av kvalitén.

Graphics Interchange Format
GIF (ang. Graphics Interchange Format) – format pliku graficznego z kompresją bezstratną (opis niżej) stworzony w 1987 r. przez firmę CompuServe. Pliki tego typu są powszechnie używane na stronach WWW, gdyż pozwalają na tworzenie animacji z paletą 256 kolorów i dwustanową przezroczystością.
Wadą formatu GIF jest brak możliwości zapisu plików graficznych w formacie True color (choć istnieje hak pozwalający na stosowanie lepszego renderingu). Wady tej pozbawiony jest konkurencyjny format PNG, który opracowano ze względu na to, że format GIF wykorzystywał patenty firm Unisys (przedawniony na terenie całego świata z dniem 7 lipca 2004 r.) i IBM (wygasł w USA 11 sierpnia 2006 r.) na algorytm kompresji LZW.
