GC-MS

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) is a method that combines the features of gas-liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry to identify different substances within a test sample. Applications of GC/MS include drug detection, fire investigation, environmental analysis, explosives investigation, and identification of unknown samples. GC/MS can also be used in airport security to detect substances in luggage or on human beings. Additionally, it can identify trace elements in materials that were previously thought to have disintegrated beyond identification.

Gaschromatographie mit Massenspektrometrie-Kopplung ist die Kopplung eines Gas-Chromatographiegerätes (GC) mit einem Massenspektrometer (MS). Dabei dient der Gas-Chromatograph zur Auftrennung des zu untersuchenden Stoffgemisches und das Massenspektrometer zur Identifizierung und gegebenenfalls auch Quantifizierung der einzelnen Komponenten. Die Säule eines Gas-Chromatographiegerätes besteht aus einer dünnen Röhre oder Kapillare als stationäre Phase und wird von einem Inertgas als mobile Phase durchströmt. In diesen Gasstrom wird das ebenfalls gasförmige, aus neutralen Molekülen bestehende Stoffgemisch injiziert. Jede Komponente des Stoffgemisches hat dabei eine charakteristische Laufgeschwindigkeit, so dass dadurch das Gemisch in Einzelsubstanzen aufgetrennt wird.
