Its sensitivity to ionizing radiation is low (like other group III nitrides), making it a suitable material for solar cell arrays for satellites. Because GaN transistors can operate at much hotter temperatures and work at much higher voltages than GaAs transistors, they make ideal power amplifiers at microwave frequencies.

Le nitrure de gallium (GaN) est un semi-conducteur à large bande (3,4 eV) utilisé en optoélectronique et dans les dispositifs de grande puissance ou de haute fréquence. C'est un composé binaire (groupe III/groupe V) qui possède une semiconductivité intrinsèque. Il est peu sensible aux rayonnements ionisants (comme tous les autres nitrures du groupe III), ce qui fait de lui un matériau approprié pour les panneaux solaires des satellites.

Galliumnitrid (GaN) ist ein III-V-Halbleiter mit großer elektronischer Bandlücke (wide bandgap), der in der Optoelektronik insbesondere für blaue, weiße und grüne LEDs und für Hochleistungs-, Hochtemperatur- und Hochfrequenzfeldeffekttransistoren Verwendung findet. Darüber hinaus ist es für Sensorikanwendungen geeignet. Es lässt sich vermutlich, durch Dotieren mit z. B. Mn, ein bei Raumtemperatur magnetischer Halbleiter realisieren, wie er für die Spintronik von Interesse ist.
