A gale is a very strong wind of at least 28 knots, 32 mph, or 51 km/h; and up to 55 knots, 63 mph, or 102 km/h.It is divided into three or four categories:A moderate gale or near gale is up to 33 kt., 38 mph, or 61 km/h, and a small craft advisory is issued.A fresh gale or just gale is 34~40 kt., 39~46 mph, or 62~74 km/h, and a gale warning is issued.A strong gale is 41~47 kt., 47~54 mph, or 75~88 km/h, and usually a gale warning is issued or maintained.A whole gale or storm is 48 kt., 55 mph, or 89 km/h or greater, and a storm warning is issued.

La gale ou mal de Sainte-Marie est une affection contagieuse de la peau, déterminée par la femelle d'un acarien microscopique (Sarcoptes scabiei), spécifique de l'homme, qui creuse dans l'épiderme des galeries (sillons) où elle dépose ses œufs, provoquant de vives démangeaisons nocturnes. Cet acarien avait été décrit dès 1687 par Bonomo et Cestoni qui en avaient fait d'emblée le responsable des lésions de la peau. Mais cette importante découverte passa vite inaperçue et l'on persista jusqu'au à faire de la gale une maladie humorale. Le rôle du sarcopte sera définitivement confirmé par Renucci (1834).

A galé pode designar qualquer tipo de navio movido a remos. Algumas variações possuem mastros e velas para auxiliar a propulsão; eram navios muito usados em guerras na Europa, por isso desempenharam um papel de grande importância na época.Por vezes os remadores eram prisioneiros, os carrascos marcavam em brasa duas letras nas costas dos condenados, os quais as temiam mais que tudo, já que um condenado as galés vivia muito pouco tempo, pois não tinham descanso, comiam mal e eram chicoteados. Os prisioneiros eram condenados as galés por terem cometido crimes muito pesados, mas com o tempo as guerras foram aumentando e o governo necessitava de mais remadores, por isso os juízes foram orientados cada vez mais a condenarem bandidos as galés, até mesmo pequenos infratores eram condenados.
