The French Bulldog is a
dog breed that originated from a group of English
bulldog fanciers who were not interested in the dog-fighting realm. The English artisans, particularly lacemakers, breed a small bulldog that would weigh at least 16 lbs but no more than 28 lbs. As the Industrial Revolution grew in England, the lacemakers and other artisans took their skills and small dogs to France where they could continue to ply their trade. The small bulldog earned quite a following in France and by the late 1800s they were known as French Bulldogs. When wealthy Americans traveled to Paris they were very taken with the little Frenchie and imported them to the United States. The breed was first exhibited at the
Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in 1896.

Companion DogsOverview
French bulldogs are very intelligent and eager to please, although some can be stubborn. Still, most do well in obedience training. They are ideal for apartment dwellers and elderly people.
These sweet-tempered dogs will tolerate most strangers, enjoy the company of gentle children, and like other animals. But actually they prefer the company of a single person--one who showers them with attention and love.
Appearance
The French bulldog's short, smooth coat may be brindle, brindle and white, fawn, cream, or solid white. The skin is soft and loose, forming wrinkles at the head and shoulders.
The body is compact and muscular, and the batlike ears sit high on the large, square head. The nose is extremely short and heavily wrinkled.
Grooming & Exercise Needs
The French bulldog needs only a quick weekly brushing and combing. The ears and the skin between the facial wrinkles need to be cleaned two to three times a week. A walk around the block is considered a big workout for the French bulldog.
Origins
The French bulldog was developed in the 19th century when the French crossed the miniature English bulldog with several French breeds, possibly terriers.
