Fregatidae

For the nuclear test codenamed Frigate Bird, see the main article Operation Dominic I and II. There are five species in the family Fregatidae, the frigatebirds. They are very closely related, and are all in the single genus Fregata. Frigatebirds attack other sea birds, hence the name. They are also sometimes called Man of War birds or Pirate birds. Since they are related to the pelicans, the term "frigate pelican" is also a name applied to them.

Die Fregattvögel (Fregatidae, Fregata) sind eine in den Tropen und Subtropen verbreitete Familie und Gattung von Hochseevögeln aus der Ordnung der Ruderfüßer. Bekannt sind sie für den aufblasbaren roten Kehlsack der Männchen sowie ihre Fähigkeit, andere Vögel zu attackieren und ihnen die Beute abzujagen (Kleptoparasitismus). Von diesem Verhalten haben sie auch ihren Namen, mit dem die Benenner an Überfälle von Fregatten anknüpfen wollten. Die Gattung umfasst fünf Arten.

La fregata è un genere di uccelli, appartenenti all'ordine dei pelecaniformi. Sono uccelli grandi, lunghi anche 1 metro e con un'apertura d'ali che raggiunge i 2 metri, coda biforcuta e molto lunga. Il becco è lungo ed adunco, atto a catturare i pesci, di cui questi uccelli si nutrono. Loro vittime sono anche altri uccelli e mammiferi di piccole dimensioni.Esistono due specie di fregata, di cui la più nota è la fregata comune, detta anche "aquila di mare", caratterizzata da una vista acutissima.
