Free agent
In
professional sports, a free agent is a team player whose contract with a team has expired, and the player is able to sign a contract with another team. The term came into wide use in North America after
sports leagues stopped using a "
reserve clause" after much acrimonious collective bargaining, which provided a repetitive option for the club to renew the contract for one more year, but did not allow the player to terminate the relationship with the team. The result of the reserve clause was abusive from the player standpoint so that a player was essentially property of the team. Once in free agency, a player is in a "pool" of free agents, from which teams can sign players who are able to drive hard bargains in the employment market place since the owners now must compete for their talents.

Vertrag mit einem Verein in seiner Liga hat und der deshalb aus eigener Entscheidung zu einem Verein seiner Wahl wechseln darf. Free Agents können Spieler sein, deren Vertrag bei einem Verein ausgelaufen ist, oder auch Spieler, die in den

sport americani per indicare un giocatore il cui contratto è scaduto o in scadenza, e quindi libero di firmare per la squadra che desidera.Il termine è stato introdotto negli
Stati Uniti dopo che le varie leghe sportive hanno smesso di adottare la "clausola di riserva", che forniva una reiterata opzione in favore del
club, che consentiva alla
franchigia di rinnovare il
contratto per un anno ulteriore ma non consentiva all'atleta di cessare il suo rapporto con la squadra. In pratica, un
giocatore era proprietà del club. Una volta nello status di "free agent", invece, l'
atleta si ritrova inserito in un gruppo di giocatori praticamente svincolati, dai quali qualsiasi squadra può attingere. In
Europa dopo la sentenza
Bosman del 1995 una condizione analoga consente agli atleti di essere ingaggiati a
parametro zero da altre squadre, e di cominciare trattative negli ultimi sei mesi di contratto con la propria società.
