Fraunhofer Society

The Fraunhofer Society (German: Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft) is a German research organization with 56 institutes spread throughout Germany, each focusing on different fields of applied science (as opposed to the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, which works primarily on basic science). It employs over 12,500, mainly scientists and engineers, with an annual research budget of about €1.2 billion. Some basic funding for the Fraunhofer Society is provided by the state (the German public, through federal government together with the German Länder, "owns" the Fraunhofer Society), but about two-thirds of the funding are earned through contract work, either for government sponsored projects or from industry.

La Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft est un organisme allemand dédié à la recherche en sciences appliquées. Son nom vient du physicien Joseph von Fraunhofer. Il regroupe 56 instituts répartis sur 40 sites à travers l'Allemagne, chacun spécialisé dans un domaine de recherche particulier et emploie 13 000 personnes ce qui en fait l'un des principaux organisme de recherche au niveau international. Son financement est assuré en partie par l'État (le gouvernement fédéral ainsi que les Länder « possèdent » l'organisme), mais les deux tiers du budget proviennent de contrats de recherches passés avec des industriels ou issus de fonds publics.

Die Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e. V. (FhG) ist die größte Organisation für angewandte Forschungs- und Entwicklungsdienstleistungen in Europa, gefolgt vom niederländischen Institut TNO. Sie stellt einen wichtigen Teil der deutschen Forschungslandschaft dar, die u. a. aus Hochschulen, Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Hermann von Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft, Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz und der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft besteht. Der Sitz der Zentrale ist in München.

Skupiając 12 500 pracowników, jest największą w Europie organizacją zajmującą się badaniami stosowanymi i ich wdrożeniami w przemyśle. Specjalizuje się w obszarach takich jak techniki informatyczne i telekomunikacyjne, mikroelektronika, techniki produkcyjne, energetyka, transport, inżynieria środowiska i technologie materiałowe.
