Frankish

The Franks or Frankish people (Latin: Franci or gens Francorum) were West Germanic tribes first identified in the 3rd century as an ethnic group living north and east of the Lower Rhine. Under the Merovingian dynasty, they founded one of the Germanic monarchies which replaced the Western Roman Empire. The Frankish state consolidated its hold over large parts of western Europe by the end of the eighth century and the Carolingian Empire and its successor states were Frankish. The Salian political elite were the most active force in spreading Christianity over western Europe.

Франки (franci) — союз западно-германских племен, впервые упоминающийся в хрониках в III веке, точнее в 242 г. По свидетельству современника, в этот год один из отрядов вторгся в Галлию у нижнего Рейна и был разбит трибуном VI легиона Аврелианом, будущим императором. Термин "франки" до сих пор вызывает дискуссии среди историков и филологов. Корень слова "франк" одни производят от слов: "бродячий", "блуждающий", другие -"храбрый", "отважный", "неустрашимый", третьи трактуют как "гордый", "благородный", четвертые как "дикий", "свирепый".Подразделяются на две большие группы. Первая — салические франки (от лат. salis — «морское побережье»), называемые также северными, или нижними, расселились в IV веке в низовьях Рейна и Шельды. Вторая группа — так называемые «береговые», или рипуарские (от лат. ripa - "берег реки") франки, жили в среднем течении Рейна и Майны.

Franker, en sammanslutning av flera germanska stammar som till exempel sugambrer, salier och ripuarier. De utgick från ett område kring floden Rhen vid början av vår tideräkning och utvidgade under tusen år, framför allt under de merovingiska och karolingiska kungaätterna, sitt maktområde till att periodvis omfatta stora delar av Europa.
