The Frankfurt School refers to a school of neo-Marxist interdisciplinary social theory, particularly associated with the Institute for Social Research at the University of Frankfurt am Main. The school initially consisted of dissident Marxists who believed that some of Marx's followers had come to parrot a narrow selection of Marx's ideas, usually in defense of orthodox Communist parties. Meanwhile, many of these theorists experienced that traditional Marxist theory could not adequately explain the turbulent and unexpected development of capitalist societies in the twentieth century. Critical of both capitalism and Soviet socialism, their writings pointed to the possibility of an alternative path to social development.

Als Frankfurter Schule wird eine Gruppe von Wissenschaftlern bezeichnet, die an die Theorien von Hegel, Marx und Freud anknüpften und denen das in Frankfurt am Main angesiedelte Institut für Sozialforschung als theoretisches Zentrum diente. Sie werden auch als Vertreter der dort begründeten Kritischen Theorie begriffen.

L’École de Francfort est le nom donné, dans les années 1960, à un groupe d'intellectuels allemands réunis autour de l'Institut de recherche sociale fondé en 1923 et soutenu par le mécène Felix Weil. Elle est actuellement dirigée par le philosophe Axel Honneth.

Frankfurtskolan (kan sägas ha grundats 1930 när Max Horkheimer blev rektor) växte fram vid Institut für Sozialforschung i Frankfurt (grundat 1923). Institutet bedrev samhällsvetenskaplig forskning med betoning på socialvetenskap. Den ekonomiska grunden kom från en stor donation av Felix Weil, son till en tysk-judisk finansman. Samtliga medlemmar av Frankfurtskolans "förstageneration" var radikala intellektuella av judiskt ursprung.
