This article is about United States military ranks. For other countries that use similar ranks, see
Lieutenant General,
General, and
General of the Army. Lieutenant General, General, General of the Army, and General of the Armies of the United States are high ranks in the United States military. In the modern United States military, Lieutenant General is a three-star rank that is immediately above the two-star rank of
Major General. General is a four-star rank that is immediately above Lieutenant General. General of the Army is a five-star rank in the army that is immediately above General. The United States rank of General of the Army is equivalent to the rank of
Field Marshal in other countries. Lieutenant General and General are currently in use, but General of the Army is reserved for war time, and no one currently holds that rank. No one currently holds the rank of General of the Armies of the United States either, and that rank has never been used by an active duty army officer at the same time as all the other ranks, so it is not clear how it compares to them. General of the Armies of the United States is sometimes considered to be the equivalent of the foreign rank of
Generalissimo.
