Food additive

Food additives are substances added to food to preserve flavor or improve its taste and appearance. Some additives have been used for centuries; for example, preserving food by pickling (with vinegar), salting, as with bacon, preserving sweets or using sulfur dioxide as in some wines. With the advent of processed foods in the second half of the 20th century, many more additives have been introduced, of both natural and artificial origin.

Les additifs alimentaires sont des produits ajoutés aux denrées alimentaires commerciales destinés à l'alimentation humaine et/ou à l'alimentation animale. Het woord additief is afkomstig van het Latijnse woord additivus, wat betekent: toegevoegd, verbonden. Een additief in het algemeen is een (meestal kleine) hoeveelheid van een eerste stof die aan een tweede stof wordt toegevoegd om de eigenschappen van die tweede stof te veranderen.Additieven worden veel toegevoegd in levensmiddelen (voedingsadditieven) en zijn daar te onderscheiden in verschillende groepen, al naar gelang hun werking. Zo zijn er kleurstoffen, conserveermiddelen, antioxidanten, emulgatoren, stabilisatoren en smaakversterkers.Verder worden additieven gebruikt in autobrandstoffen (benzine, dieselolie) en smeerolie. Molybdeensulfide is zo'n additief. Ook in kunststoffen wordt het toegepast (bijvoorbeeld weekmakers in PVC).
