food chain
food web, pyramid-shaped structure illustrating the feeding order in nature wherein each organism feeds upon the next lowest creature, feeding relationships between predators and prey wherein animals and plants get food in an ecosystem; supermarket franchise
Food chain
Food chains, food webs and/or food networks describe the feeding relationships between species in an
ecological community. They graphically represent the transfer of
material and
energy from one species to another within an
ecosystem.
Organisms are connected to the organisms they consume by arrows representing the direction of
biomass transfer. Typically a food chain or food web refers to a graph where only connections are recorded, and a food network or ecosystem network refers to a network where the connections are given weights representing the quantity of nutrients or energy being transferred.
