is the centre of the municipality of Flora in the county of Sogn og Fjordane, Norway, and is the country's westernmost town. The town was founded by royal decree in 1860 and today the center of Florø has 8343 inhabitants (2006). The basis for the foundation of the town was the rich herring fisheries, symbolised by three herrings in the town's coat of arms. Fishing is still an important part of the towns economy, in addition to shipbuilding and service industries. Since petroleum was discovered in the North Sea in the 1960s, Florø has been used as a supply base for the petroleum industry.
