Fluoride is the anion F^-, the reduced form of fluorine when as an ion and when bonded to another element. Both organofluorine compounds and inorganic fluorine containing compounds are called fluorides. Fluoride, like other halides, is a monovalent ion (-1 charge). Its compounds often have properties that are distinct relative to other halides. Structurally, and to some extent chemically, the fluoride ion resembles the hydroxide ion. Fluorine-containing compounds range from potent toxins such as sarin to life-saving pharmaceuticals such as efavirenz, and from inert materials such as sulfur hexafluoride to the highly reactive chlorine trifluoride. The range of fluorine-containing compounds is vast because fluorine is capable of forming compounds with all the elements except helium and neon.

In medizinischen Zusammenhängen wird der Ausdruck floride oder auch florid (lat.: florere = blühen) zur Kennzeichnung einer Erkrankung verwendet, die sich im Stadium der vollständigen Symptomausprägung befindet. Man spricht von der floriden Phase oder dem floriden Stadium der Erkrankung.

Fluoride sind die Salze der Fluorwasserstoffsäure (HF), die auch als Flusssäure bekannt ist. Sie enthalten in ihrem Ionengitter als negative Gitterbausteine (Anionen) Fluorid-Ionen (F^-). Daneben werden auch kovalente, nicht-ionische Verbindungen von Nichtmetallen sowie organische Fluorverbindungen wie etwa die Fluorkohlenwasserstoffe oder Carbonsäurederivate veraltet als Fluoride bezeichnet.

C'est aussi le plus petit anion ce qui explique sa capacité élevée de fixation et de recombinaison à diverses molécules (y compris celles formant les dents et les os) et, en grande partie, sa toxicité. Exemples de fluorures usuels : l'acide fluorhydrique (HF), et le fluorure de sodium (NaF).

Fluorid är en form av fluor där atomerna är envärt negativt laddade joner. Fluoridjonen har den kemiska beteckningen F^-.
