Flores, El Petén

Flores is the capital city of Petén department of Guatemala. It is located at . The population is 13,700 (2003).Flores serves as the municipal seat for the surrounding municipality, with which it shares a name (population 22,600).The old part of the city is located on an island on Lake Peten Itza, connected to the mainland by a short causeway. On the mainland are the suburb towns of Santa Elena and San Benito.

Flores est la capitale du Département du Petén dans le nord du Guatemala. La vieille ville est située sur une île du lac Petén Itzá. Elle est reliée à la terre ferme par une chaussée de 500m. Elle a été construite sur le site de la cité maya de Tayasal, dont il ne subsiste rien. Flores est équipé d'un aéroport international et constitue le point de départ d'excursions vers les sites archéologiques maya de la région, notamment Tikal

Die Stadt Flores in Guatemala ist die Hauptstadt des nördlichsten Departmento El Petén. 2005 hatte die im Petén-Itzá-See auf der Insel San Andrés gelegene und mit dem Festland nur durch einen künstlichem Damm verbundene Stadt 18.399 Einwohner. Neben der Bedeutung als Umschlagplatz für die Produkte aus dem guatemaltekischen Hinterland ist Flores besonders von touristischem Interesse. Der Flugplatz außerhalb der Stadt macht die Flores zu einem guten Ausgangsplatz für Ausflüge zu den umliegenden Maya-Ruinen wie Tikal.Als erstes besiedelten die Itzá-Maya die Insel nachdem sie aus Chichén Itzá vertrieben wurden, sie nannten die von ihnen gegründete Stadt Tayazal. Obwohl Hernán Cortés die Stadt bereits 1524 besuchte, verzichtete er auf einen Krieg gegen die dort lebenden Itzá. Erst 1697 wurde Tayazal erobert, anschließend die Pyramiden und Tempel der Maya komplett zerstört.

Ośrodek administracyjny departamentu Petén.Najstarsza część miasta położona jest na wyspie na jeziorze Petén Itzá, połączonej obecnie z lądem krótką groblą. Na lądzie znajdują się dwa duże przedmieścia: Santa Elena i San Benito. W czasach prekolumbijskich było to główne miasto Majów z grupy Itza, znane wówczas pod nazwą Tayasal. Znane było również jako Noh Petén, czyli "miasto-wyspa" lub Tah Itzá, czyli "miejsce ludu Itzá". Miasto na wyspie było ostatnią ostoją cywilizacji Majów, podbitą przez Hiszpanów dopiero w 1697.
