Firebelly Newt
Cynops sp.
General Info:
Adult length up to 4".
The more plants and secluded areas within terrariums the better. Newts have sensitive skin and generally would rather not be handled. If handling is desired, it is important to wash hands before and after handling due to the natural skin toxins of the firebelly newt.
Temperature/Humidity:
Ideal temperature for these newts should range between 72 and 78 degrees. The humidity for newts should be kept at or near 80 percent.
Lighting:
Newts may benefit from the use of ultraviolet lighting to maintain good health. Ultraviolet lighting is recommended for 12 hours per day. The use of a timer is recommended to maintain proper light periods.
Feeding/Watering:
Newts do well on a diet consisting of a variety of vitamin/calcium dusted insects such as small crickets, bloodworms, ghost shrimp, and small subterranean worms such as red wigglers. Adult frogs should be fed 3-4 times per week. Juveniles can be fed daily.
Habitat/Housing:
Successful permanent maintenance requires at least a 10 gallon aquarium. A secure screen lid is essential for proper air exchange. The enclosure must include either a sloped large water bowl or allow for a swimming area. This can be accomplished by using gravel as a substrate and sloping it to form a "beach" area. It is also recommended that a small powerhead water filter is used to keep the water clean. Live plants can be used in newt enclosures to maintain humidity levels and create a natural atmosphere. Misting the habitat once or twice daily will help maintain proper humidity levels.
Substrate (Bedding):
2" to 3" inches of a gravel is recommended for newt terrariums.
Responsible pet ownership begins on the trip home!
For the best health and well being of your new pet, it is important to remember to take it directly home. If you have more shopping or errands to complete, consider picking up your pet last. This will ensure the animal encounters the least amount of stress possible. Have the new terrarium completely set up before bringing your new friend "home". Additionally, make sure your new family member is allowed enough time to adjust to its new home. Wait three or four days before attempting to handle your pet and always supervise children when they interact with pets.
