Fetter (Buddhism)
In Buddhism, a mental fetter or "chain" or "bond" (Pāli: samyojana, saŋyojana, saññojana) shackles a person to samsara, the cycle of endless suffering. By completely cutting through all fetters, one attains Nibbana (Skt.: Nirvana). In comparison to similar Buddhist concepts, fetters span multiple lifetimes and are difficult to remove, while hindrances are transitory obstacles.  Kilesas encompass all mental defilements including both fetters and hindrances.
