Fertile Crescent

The Fertile Crescent is a historical crescent-shape region in the Middle East incorporating the Levant, Ancient Mesopotamia, and Ancient Egypt. The term "Fertile Crescent" was coined by University of Chicago archaeologist James Henry Breasted.Watered by the Nile, Jordan, Euphrates and Tigris rivers and covering some 400-500,000 square kilometers, the region extends from the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea around the north of the Syrian Desert and through the Jazirah and Mesopotamia to the Persian Gulf. These areas correspond to the present-day Egypt, Israel, West Bank, Gaza strip, and Lebanon and parts of Jordan, Syria, Iraq, south-eastern Turkey and south-western Iran. The population of the Nile River Basin is about 70 million, the Jordan River Basin about 20 million, and the Tigris and Euphrates Basins about 30 million, giving the present-day Fertile Crescent a total population of approximately 120 million, or at least a quarter of the population of the Middle East.

Le Croissant fertile est une région du Moyen-Orient comprenant les territoires des États actuels d'Israël, du Liban, de Chypre, du Koweït, de Palestine (Cisjordanie et Gaza) ainsi que des parties de la Jordanie, de la Syrie, de l'Irak, de l'Iran, de l'Égypte (sur ce point, il ne semble pas y avoir consensus) et le sud-est de la Turquie. Le terme « Croissant fertile » fut donné par l'archéologue James Henry Breasted de l'Université de Chicago car l'arc formé par les différentes zones ressemble à un croissant.

Fruchtbarer Halbmond (Begriff von James Henry Breasted eingeführt, von den Arabern entsprechend al-hilal al-chasib genannt) ist die Bezeichnung für das niederschlagsreiche Winterregengebiet nördlich der Syrischen Wüste bzw. im Norden der arabischen Halbinsel (einschließlich der Levante, des Zweistromlands zwischen Euphrat und Tigris, und Ägyptens), das die innerarabischen Trockengebiete Syriens, Saudi-Arabiens und des Irak als Kerngebiet und den Südwesten Anatoliens als Teil des Kerngebietes Türkei und Bokistan sichelförmig umschließt.

Żyzny Półksiężyc — pas ziem o większej żyzności, mający kształt wielkiego półksiężyca, ciągnącego się od Egiptu poprzez Palestynę i Syrię po Mezopotamię. Kolebka geograficzna wielkich cywilizacji starożytnego Bliskiego Wschodu. Obejmował tereny rozciągające się od Memfis w dolinie Nilu, aż do Ur na południu Mezopotamii. Żyzny Półksiężyc to zatem tereny Syrii i Kanaanu, stepu pomiędzy łańcuchem górskim Azji Mniejszej i Pustynią Syryjską. Palestyna leżąca pomiędzy Egiptem i Mezopotamią stała się teatrem wielkich migracji i konfliktów politycznych obu potęg Bliskiego Wschodu, zaś od epoki patriarchy Abrahama: „Ziemią Obiecaną”.

De Vruchtbare Sikkel of Vruchtbare Halvemaan - de laatste naam is bedacht door de bij leven aan de Universiteit van Chicago verbonden archeoloog James Henry Breasted - is een gebied in het Midden-Oosten, gelegen tussen de Eufraat en de Tigris in, dat (delen van) het huidige   Israël, Palestijnse Autoriteit, Jordanië, Libanon, Syrië, Irak en Turkije omvat. De term wordt meestal gebruikt om het archeologische gebied aan te geven waar zeer vroeg landbouw is ontstaan. Dit en de verspeiding van de landbouw staat bekend als de Neolithische revolutie. De Neolitische revolutie houdt in dat jagers en verzamelaars overgingen op landbouw en veeteelt.
