Regarded on his emergence as the future of English defending – a ball-playing centre-half – he has inevitably been compared to Hammers’ legend Bobby Moore. He made his international debut against Cameroon in 1997. He was in England’s squad at the 1998 World Cup, but he did not play. The elegant defender is excellent on the ball, and a natural libero, though his defensive acumen has sometimes been questioned. Looks likely to be Sol Campbell’s long-term partner in the English defence in the near future.
