Female

Female (♀) is the sex of an organism, or a part of an organism, which produces ova (egg cells). The ova are defined as the larger gametes in a heterogamous reproduction system, while the smaller, usually motile gamete, the spermatozoon is produced by the male. A female individual cannot reproduce sexually without access to the gametes of a male (an exception is parthenogenesis). Some organisms can reproduce both sexually and asexually.

En zoologie, une femelle est un animal appartenant au sexe femelle, caractérisé par la production des ovules qui permettent la reproduction de l'espèce, et, le plus souvent, par la gestation. L'ovule, produit par l'ovaire, se transformant, après fécondation par un spermatozoïde produit par un individu mâle, en embryon qui donnera naissance à un jeune directement (en passant parfois par un stade larvaire) chez les espèces vivipares ou par l'intermédiaire d'un œuf pondu chez les espèces ovipares. Chez certaines espèces, notamment les poissons, la fécondation se fait dans le milieu ambiant, les œufs fécondés n'étant pas portés par la femelle.
