FM

.fm is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the Federated States of Micronesia, a group of islands located in the Pacific Ocean. Except for reserved names like .com.fm, .net.fm, .org.fm and others, any person in the world can register a .fm domain for a fee, much of the income from which goes to the government and people of the islands. The domain name is popular (and thus economically valuable) for FM radio station websites (other similar ccTLDs are .am, .tv, .cd and .dj).

In telecommunications, frequency modulation (FM) conveys information over a carrier wave by varying its frequency (contrast this with amplitude modulation, in which the amplitude of the carrier is varied while its frequency remains constant). In analog applications, the instantaneous frequency of the carrier is directly proportional to the instantaneous value of the input signal.  Digital data can be sent by shifting the carrier's frequency among a set of discrete values, a technique known as frequency-shift keying.

.fm est le domaine national de premier niveau (country code top level domain : ccTLD) réservé à la Micronésie. Ce domaine a cependant rapidement été assimilié à la Modulation de fréquence et est devenu un domaine prisé des stations de radio de toutes nationalités. Die Frequenzmodulation (FM) ist ein Modulationsverfahren, bei dem die Trägerfrequenz durch das zu übertragende Signal verändert wird. Die Frequenzmodulation ermöglicht gegenüber der Amplitudenmodulation einen höheren Dynamikumfang des Informationssignals. Weiterhin ist sie weniger anfällig gegenüber Störungen. Das Verfahren wurde von J. R. Carson schon 1922 mathematisch korrekt untersucht und von Edwin Howard Armstrong zuerst praktisch umgesetzt. Die Frequenzmodulation ist eine Winkelmodulation und verwandt mit der Phasenmodulation. Bei beiden wird der Phasenwinkel T beeinflusst.

Tranne per alcuni domini riservati come .com.fm, .net.fm, .org.fm e altri, qualsiasi persona nel mondo può liberamente comprare un dominio .fm pagando una cifra che in parte è destinata al governo e agli abitanti degli Stati stessi. Il suo successo è dovuto alla somiglianza con l'acronimo FM
