The Premier League (officially known as the Barclays Premier League for sponsorship reasons, colloquially known as The Premiership), is a professional league competition for football clubs located at the top echelon of the English football league system (above The Football League). It is the world's most watched sporting league, and the most lucrative football league. Based solely on the performances of member clubs in European competitions over a five-year period, with the 2006/07 season results in consideration, the Premier League is unofficially ranked second behind Spain's La Liga, but ahead of Italy's Serie A in the UEFA rankings of European leagues; this is an improvement on the third place from the official rankings up to the 2005–06 season.

Le Championnat d'Angleterre de football est appelé English Premier League ou FA Premier League ou Premiership ou Barclay's Premier League. Ce championnat regroupe vingt équipes qui disputent chacune 38 matchs. À la fin de la saison, les trois équipes totalisant le plus faible nombre de points sont reléguées. Ce championnat est l'un des plus prestigieux au monde et est le plus populaire en termes de téléspectateurs internationaux (estimés à plus de un milliard en 2007), et est réputé pour être l'un des plus physiques en raison de l'engagement physique et du calendrier surchargé. Un progrès fut toutefois réalisé quand le championnat passa de 22 à 20 clubs en 1995.

Die Premier League - nach dem offiziellen Sponsoren auch „Barclays Premier League“ bzw. umgangssprachlich „The Premiership“ genannt - ist die höchste Spielklasse im englischen Fußball und befindet sich damit auf der obersten Ebene des englischen Ligasystems. Es nehmen momentan 20 Vereine an einer Spielrunde, die zwischen August und Mai des Folgejahres ausgetragen wird, teil. Über eine Auf- und Abstiegsregelung mit dem darunter angesiedelten Football-League-Verband findet jährlich ein Austausch von drei Klubs statt.

Premier League (nazywana także Barclays Premiership od nazwy sponsora) to piłkarskie rozgrywki ligowe na najwyższym szczeblu w Anglii. Jest ligą najczęściej oglądaną i najbardziej lukratywną na świecie.FA Premier League (w takim kształcie, jaką znamy obecnie) została założona w 1992 przez kluby grające wówczas w The Football League (przed 1992 organ skupiający trzy najwyższe szczeble angielskiej piłki); dziś liczy sobie 20 zespołów. Podczas piętnastu rozegranych sezonów mistrzostwo wywalczyły tylko cztery drużyny: Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers, Chelsea F.C. i Arsenal Londyn. Spośród tej czwórki najbardziej utytułowany jest zespół z Manchesteru, który wywalczył tytuł dziewięć razy, w tym trzy razy z rzędu. Obecnym mistrzem Premiership są "Czerwone Diabły", które wygrały rozgrywki 2006/07.

La FA Premier League, detta anche per ragioni di sponsorizzazione Barclays Premiership, è il massimo campionato di calcio inglese, è posto sotto l'egida della Football Association e corrisponde alla Serie A italiana.Si tratta di un campionato di 20 squadre che formalmente stanno al di fuori della Football League, nato da uno scisma del calcio inglese del 1992.Alla squadra prima in classifica al termine dei gironi di andata e ritorno (quindi dopo 38 gare) viene assegnato il titolo di vincitori della Premiership ed insieme alle altre tre meglio classificate accede alla Champions League. La quinta classificata accede alla Coppa UEFA insieme alle vincitrici di League Cup e FA Cup. Le ultime tre classificate sono retrocesse alla divisione maggiore del sistema della Football League, il Football League Championship.

È il campionato di calcio per club più antico del mondo (anche se non è la più antica competizione del mondo di calcio) e fu disputato per la prima volta nel 1888-89, sebbene affondi le sue radici nel 1863, anno di fondazione della Football Association o FA.Dal 1992 il massimo campionato inglese si chiama FA Premier League (può anche prendere il nome dello sponsor di turno, attualmente si chiama anche Barclays Premiership) ed è composto da 20 squadre. La Premier League nacque quando i club della vecchia First Division si misero d'accordo per capitalizzare al meglio i proventi televisivi e di sponsor.
