Existentialism is generally considered to be the philosophical and cultural movement which holds that the starting point of philosophical thinking must be the individual and the experiences of the individual, that  moral thinking and scientific thinking together do not suffice to understand human existence, and, therefore, that a further set of categories, governed by the norm of authenticity, is necessary to understand human existence. (Authenticity, in the context of existentialism, is being true to one's own personality, spirit, or character.)

Mit Existentialismus wird im allgemeinen Sinne die französische philosophische Strömung der Existenzphilosophie bezeichnet. Ihre Hauptvertreter sind: Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus und Gabriel Marcel.

L'existentialisme est un courant philosophique et littéraire qui postule que les individus créent le sens et l'essence de leur vie, par opposition à ce qu'elle soit créée pour eux par des doctrines théologique ou philosophique. L'existentialisme considère chaque personne comme un être unique qui est maître non seulement de ses actes et de son destin, mais également - pour le meilleur comme pour le pire - des valeurs qu'il décide d'adopter.

Existentialism är en term som har tillskrivits en grupp filosofers arbete under sent 1800- och 1900-tal, vilka trots sina doktrinära skillnader, delade tron att filosofiskt tänkande börjar med det mänskliga subjektet – inte bara det tänkande subjektet utan det agerande och kännande, den levande mänskliga individen. Inom existentialismen karaktäriseras en individs startpunkt efter vad som har kallats för "den existentiella inställningen", eller en känsla av desorientation och förvirring inför vad som verkar som en meningslös och absurd värld. Många existentialister har också sett traditionell systematisk eller akademisk filosofi, både i stil och innehåll, som alltför abstrakt och främmande inför konkret mänsklig erfarenhet.

Egzystencjalizm - współczesny kierunek filozoficzny (znajdujący wyraz także w literaturze), według którego przedmiotem badań filozofii są indywidualne losy jednostki ludzkiej, wolnej ("skazanej na wolność") i odpowiedzialnej, co stwarza poczucie "lęku i beznadziei istnienia" (pesymizm).
