Execution by burning

Execution by burning has a long history as a method of punishment for crimes such as treason, heresy and witchcraft (burning, however, was actually less common than hanging, pressing, or drowning as a punishment for witchcraft). For a number of reasons, this method of execution fell into disfavor among governments in the late 18th century; today, it is considered cruel and unusual punishment. The particular form of execution by burning in which the condemned is bound to a large stake is more commonly called burning at the stake.

Spalenie na stosie - sposób wykonania kary śmierci polegający na przywiązaniu skazańca (często heretyka, innowiercy, czarownicy, także Żydów; obok tego karę tę stosowano wobec pospolitych przestępców np. fałszerzy pieniędzy) do słupa, ułożeniu stosu z drewna i podpaleniu go. Skazany najczęściej umierał na skutek zatrucia czadem, dwutlenkiem węgla i innymi składnikami dymu powstającymi w wyniku spalania drewna. Kara ta była stosowana od starożytności, przez średniowiecze, aż do XVIII wieku.

De brandstapel heeft een lange historie als doodstraf voor misdaden als hoogverraad, ketterij en hekserij. Vooral tijdens de Inquisitie zijn veel mensen tot de brandstapel veroordeeld.Tegenwoordig doet deze straf wreed aan, maar in de Middeleeuwen geloofde men dat de veroordeelde zijn ziel van het vagevuur zou kunnen redden door de reinigende werking van de vlammen. Terechtstellingen op deze wijze vonden plaats in het openbaar, deels als (bedoeld leed)vermaak maar vooral als waarschuwing voor de toeschouwers dat zij niet dezelfde misdrijven zouden begaan.
