Eurotunnel

Eurotunnel plc (in the UK) and Eurotunnel SA (in France) make up the Eurotunnel Group, founded in August 1986, which manages and operates the Channel Tunnel between the UK and France.It operates the car shuttle and earns revenue on other trains (freight by EWS and SNCF and passenger service by Eurostar) passing through the tunnel. However, passenger numbers are around one-third of the original projections.Heavily indebted, the company has been struggling with the interest on the £10bn it has taken to construct the tunnel. The tunnel cost nearly 6 times more than expected to build and Eurotunnel's debts are around £6.2bn. Its profits cannot even match its interest payments. In order to deal with this, many cuts in services have been introduced with varying success and a third of the staff has been laid off.

Der Eurotunnel, auch Kanaltunnel genannt, ist ein 50 Kilometer langer Eisenbahntunnel unter der Meeresstraße Ärmelkanal zwischen Folkestone in Kent (England) und Coquelles nahe Calais (Frankreich).Das lange geplante und sehr kostspielige Tunnelbauprojekt, dem einige fehlgeschlagene Baupläne vorangingen, wurde 1994 vollendet. Der Eurotunnel besteht aus zwei eingleisigen Haupttunneln für die Züge und einem zweispurigen Servicetunnel für schmale Fahrzeuge.

L'Eurotunnel (noto come Channel Tunnel nel Regno Unito e le tunnel sous la Manche in Francia) è un tunnel lungo 50 km che unisce il comune britannico di Cheriton nel Kent a quello francese di Coquelles, vicino a Calais passando sotto il fondo del Canale della Manica. Per l'esattezza, Eurotunnel è il nome della società che gestisce il tunnel. La sua realizzazione vide numerose false partenze e fu finalmente completata nel 1994. È il secondo tunnel ferroviario per lunghezza al mondo, dopo il tunnel Seikan in Giappone.
