European integration is the process of industrial, political, legal, economic (and in some cases social and cultural) integration of states wholly or partially in Europe. European integration has primarily come about through the European Union and the Council of Europe.

Die Europäische Integration steht begrifflich für einen „immer engeren Zusammenschluss der europäischen Völker“ (Abs. 1 der Präambel des EG-Vertrages). Offiziell wurde dieser Begriff erstmals 1954 bei der Gründung der Westeuropäischen Union (WEU) verwendet. Mit der Gründung der Europäischen Union durch den Vertrag von Maastricht 1992 wurde der „Prozeß der europäischen Integration auf eine neue Stufe gestellt“ (Abs. 1 der Präambel des Maastrichter Vertrages); der Vertrag von Lissabon 2007 kennzeichnet den aktuellen Stand der Entwicklung.
