Continental Europe, also referred to as mainland Europe or simply the Continent (particularly by the British, Icelanders and other European island nations), is the continent of Europe, explicitly excluding European islands.

Europe ( or ) is, by convention, one of the world's seven continents. Comprising the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, Europe is generally 'divided' from Asia to its east by the watershed divides of the Ural and Caucasus Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian and Black Seas, and the waterways connecting the Black and Aegean Seas. Europe is bordered by the Arctic Ocean and other bodies of water to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Black Sea and connected waterways to the southeast. Yet the borders of Europe—a concept dating back to classical antiquity—are somewhat arbitrary, as the primarily physiographic term "continent" can incorporate cultural and political elements.

Europa (griechisch , ) ist ein Erdteil, der sich über das westliche Fünftel der eurasischen Landmasse erstreckt. Obwohl es geographisch gesehen ein Subkontinent ist, der mit Asien zusammen den Kontinent Eurasien bildet, wird es historisch und kulturell begründet meist als eigenständiger Kontinent betrachtet. Dies verweist darauf, dass sich der Begriff „Europa“ nicht in der geographischen Definition erschöpft, sondern sich auch auf historische, kulturelle, politische, wirtschaftliche, rechtliche und ideelle Aspekte bezieht.

L’Europe est considérée comme un continent ou une partie de l’Eurasie (péninsule occidentale), voire de l’Eurafrasie, selon le point de vue. Elle est parfois qualifiée de « Vieux Continent » (ou d’« Ancien Monde »), par opposition au « Nouveau Monde » (Amérique).

Europa är jordens till ytan näst minsta men till befolkningen tredje största världsdel. Europa har cirka 730 miljoner invånare och mer än 90 procent av invånarna talar språk som tillhör den  indoeuropeiska språkfamiljen. Europa är världens näst mest tätbefolkade världsdel och har den näst högsta produktiviteten per person. Världsdelen Europa utgör den västligaste delen av kontinenten Eurasien. Mot söder avgränsas Europa av Medelhavet, mot väster av Atlanten och mot norr av Ishavet; gränsen mellan Europa och Nordamerika går i havet mellan Island, som tillhör Europa, och Grönland, som tillhör Nordamerika. Mot öster går gränsen mellan Europa och Asien längs Uralbergen, Uralfloden, Kaspiska havet, Kaukasus vattendelare, Svarta havet, Bosporen, Marmarasjön och Dardanellerna.
