Ethnologue

Ethnologue: Languages of the World is a web and print publication of SIL International (formerly known as the Summer Institute of Linguistics), a Christian linguistic service organization which studies lesser-known languages primarily to provide the speakers with Bibles in their native language.The Ethnologue contains statistics for 6,912 languages in the 15th edition, released in 2005 (up from 6,809 in the 14th edition, released 2000) and gives the number of speakers, location, dialects, linguistic affiliations, availability of the Bible, and so forth. It is currently the most comprehensive existing language inventory, along with the Linguasphere Register. However, some information regarding more esoteric languages is quite dated.

SIL International (ursprünglich bekannt unter dem Namen „Summer Institute of Linguistics“, deutsch "Linguistisches Sommerinstitut") ist eine wissenschaftliche nichtstaatliche Organisation mit dem Hauptziel, im Hinblick auf die Erweiterung des linguistischen Wissens vor allem unbekannte Sprachen zu studieren, zu entwickeln und zu dokumentieren, die Alphabetisierung zu fördern und Hilfestellung bei der Entwicklung von Minderheitensprachen zu leisten. Dieses Projekt wurde 1951 als eine Einleitung in vierzig Sprachen vom Missionar Richard Pittman begonnen.

Ethnologue: Languages of the world is een overzicht van alle talen op de wereld (ruim 6900). Het overzicht groeit nog steeds omdat door linguïstisch onderzoek nog steeds nieuwe talen geïdentificeerd worden.De eerste publicatie van de Ethnolgue in 1951 door grondlegger Richard S. Pittman bevatte 46 talen, zijn zevende editie in 1969 telde er al 4493. Onder redactie van Barbara F. Grimes groeide de lijst vervolgens naar meer dan 6800 talen. In de zeventiger jaren is de lijst in een databasesysteem gegoten en sind 2000 is deze ondergebracht bij SIL International en kan inmiddels ook online worden geraadpleegd.
