The Emperor (Ge'ez: ንጉሠ ነገሥት, , "King of Kings") of Ethiopia was the hereditary ruler of Ethiopia until the abolition of the monarchy in 1974. The Emperor was the head of state and head of government, with ultimate executive, judicial and legislative power in that country. A National Geographic Magazine article called imperial Ethiopia "nominally a constitutional monarchy; in fact [it was] a benevolent autocracy."

Negus (nəguś) bedeutet im Ge'ez und der amharischen Sprache „König“ und ist einer der ältesten Feudaltitel des Kaiserreiches Äthiopien.

Negus (czasem także nygus, w języku amharskim "król") - historyczny i polityczny tytuł władców krain Etiopii w okresie monarchii. Jeden z najstarszych feudalnych tytułów etiopskich, bowiem był w użyciu już w V-I w. p.n.e. od czasów państwa Aksum, został następnie przejęty przez chrześcijańskich władców Etiopii i był używany do czasów współczesnych.

Negus (vorst) is de benaming van een Ethiopisch koning. In 1928 nam Ras Tafari Makonnen, de Ethiopische regent (en latere keizer Haile Selassie) deze titel aan. In 1930 werd hij negusa nagast, dwz. 'koning der koningen' (ofwel keizer).
