Escape velocity
For other senses of this term, see escape velocity (disambiguation). In physics, escape velocity is the speed where the kinetic energy of an object is equal in magnitude to its potential energy in a gravitational field. It is commonly described as the speed needed to "break free" from a gravitational field; however, this is not true for objects under their own power.

Escape velocity
The velocity an object must attain if it is to escape a celestial object's gravitational influence. For instance, the escape velocity for an object to leave the Earth is approximately 12 km/s or 42,000 km/hr. Though the molecules in the upper atmosphere are in continuous high speed motion very few are fast enough; however the less massive Moon has a lower escape velocity of 2.3 km/s and so if it had an atmosphere it has gone.
