Epitaph (Mingus)

Epitaph is a composition by jazz musician Charles Mingus. It takes more than two hours to perform and was only completely discovered during the cataloguing process after his death. With the help of a grant from the Ford Foundation, the score and instrumental parts were copied, and the piece itself was premiered by a 30-piece orchestra, conducted by Gunther Schuller. This concert was produced by Mingus' widow, Sue, at Alice Tully Hall on June 3, 1989, ten years after his death.

Epitaph ist ein Jazz-Album von Charles Mingus, das posthum 1989 aufgenommen und 1990 auf CD veröffentlicht wurde. Die CD Epitaph ist die Aufnahme einer großorchestralen Suite, deren Noten im Nachlass des verstorbenen Jazz-Bassisten, Komponisten und Bandleaders Charles Mingus (* 1922, † 1979) von Andrew Homzy aufgefunden, von Gunther Schuller und Homzy rekonstruiert und am 3. Juni 1989 uraufgeführt wurde. 1990 wurden Studioaufnahmen mit dem gleichen Ensemble als Doppel-CD auf dem Label Columbia Records veröffentlicht (CBS 466631-2).
