Epic poetry
The epic is long, exalted
narrative poetry, generally concerning a serious subject and details the heroic deeds and events important to a culture or nation. A work need not be written to qualify as an epic, although even the works of such great poets as
Homer,
Dante Alighieri, and
John Milton would be unlikely to have survived without being written down. The first epics are known as primary, or original, epics. Epics that attempt to imitate these like
Virgil's The Aenied and
John Milton's Paradise Lost are known as literary, or secondary, epics. Another word for epic poetry is (plural: epyllia) which is a brief
narrative poem with a
romantic or
mythological theme. The term, which means 'little ', came in use in the
Nineteenth Century. It refers primarily to the type of erotic and mythological long elegy of which
Ovid remains the master; to a lesser degree, the term includes some poems of the
English Renaissance, particularly those influenced by Ovid. One suggested example of
classical epyllion may be seen in the story of Nisus and Euryalus in Book IX of
The Aeneid.

Épopée
L’épopée est un long poème d’envergure nationale narrant les exploits historiques ou mythiques d’un héros ou d’un peuple. Le mot lui-même est issu du
grec ancien epopoiia (de έπος (epos), le récit ou les paroles d’un chant, et ποιω (poiein), faire, créer) et désigne "l’action de faire un récit". On parle également de
tonalité épique, ou de registre épique, pour des œuvres non poétiques, ou des poèmes brefs dont le style et la thématique sont proches de l’épopée.

Epos
Epos (epopeja, czasem także
poemat epicki) - jeden z głównych i najstarszy gatunek
epiki.Obejmuje utwory najczęściej poetyckie (np.
Iliada), rzadziej tworzone prozą (np. Tain bo Coulange), a ukazujące dzieje życia legendarnych, częściowo historycznych lub całkiem historycznych bohaterów, na tle wydarzeń przełomowych dla danego narodu, lub też opowieść o prapoczątkach tego narodu lub grupy etnicznej. Często opowiadają nie tylko o postaciach ludzkich, ale też boskich, magicznych czy demonicznych (np.
Ramajana). Najwcześniejsze eposy mają charakter zbioru opowieści mitycznych i wywodzą się często z czasów, w których grupa ich autorów nie znała pisma.

Epiek is de verzamelnaam voor producten van verhalende literatuur, zowel in
poëzie als in
proza, waarbij de nadruk ligt op de beschrijving van een gebeuren.De epiek is, naast de
lyriek en de
dramatiek, een van de hoofdvormen van de literatuur. Een bekend voorbeeld van epiek is
