English unit is the American name for a unit in one of a number of systems of
units of measurement, some obsolete, and some still in use. In spite of the name, it does not necessarily refer to the (non-
SI) system of units still in widespread, but mostly unofficial, use in
England and the rest of the
United Kingdom. The system is known as the English System in the United States and elsewhere as the
Imperial System. The American term 'English unit' includes the Imperial units as well as various other U.S. units such as the U.S. gallon (Queen Anne's wine gallon) and the U.S. bushel (Winchester bushel).
