Well-bred, trained English sprin ger spaniels are playful, trusting, loyal, and affectionate. Eager to please, they do very well in obedience training. These dogs are good with children and other animals and love to play and romp with their families, although some may be aggressively possessive. Springers that are left alone too much may become destructive and/or aggressive. They may warm up slowly to strangers but are not usually aggressive toward them.
Appearance
The medium-length outercoat can be flat or wavy; the undercoat is short, soft, and dense. Coat color is liver or black with white markings; liver or black and white with tan markings; liver; or blue roan. The pendulous ears have abundant hair and the legs and chest have some feathering.
Grooming & Exercise Needs
The English springer spaniel sheds very little but should be brushed two to three times a week to avoid matting on the ears, chest, and legs. The springer needs several brisk walks and runs in a secure area daily. This dog also appreciates long walks, retrieving balls from water, and jogs or runs in a secure rural setting.
Origins
The English springer spaniel was developed in England in the 17th century to flush, or spring, pheasants from their hiding places and retrieve them for the hunter.
