English Renaissance

The English Renaissance was a cultural and artistic movement in England dating from the early 16th century to the early 17th century. It is associated with the pan-European Renaissance that many cultural historians believe originated in northern Italy in the fourteenth century. This era in English cultural history is sometimes referred to as "the age of Shakespeare" or "the Elizabethan era," taking the name of the English Renaissance's most famous author and most important monarch, respectively; however it is worth remembering that these names are rather misleading: Shakespeare was not an especially famous writer in his own time, and the English Renaissance covers a period both before and after Elizabeth's reign.

הרנסאנס האנגלי הוא מונח המתאר תנועה תרבותית ואמנותית באנגליה, שהחלה בתחילת המאה ה-16 והסתיימה בתחילת המאה ה-17. תנועה זו קשורה לרנסאנס האירופאי שהחל ככל הנראה בצפון איטליה במאה ה-14. תקופה זו בהיסטוריה התרבותית של אנגליה נקראת לעתים "העידן האליזבתני" או "עידן שייקספיר", על שם השליטה הכי חשובה והסופר הכי מפורסם של הרנסאנס האנגלי. אולם ראוי לציין כי מונחים אלו הם מטעים, משום ששייקספיר לא היה מפורסם בזמנו באותה מידה של היום, והרנסאנס האנגלי מכסה תקופה שהחלה לפני והסתיימה אחרי תקופת שלטונה של אליזבת הראשונה.בתקופה זו משוררים, כמו ג'ון מילטון, פרסמו עבודות שניתן למצוא בהן את העניין הגובר של אנשי התקופה להבין את האמונות הנוצריות האנגליות. מחזאים כמו ויליאם שייקספיר וכריסטופר מרלו חיברו ייצוגים תיאטרלים של תפיסת החיים, המוות וההיסטוריה של האנגלים. לקראת סוף עידן שושלת טיודור, פילוסופים כמו תומאס מור ופרנסיס בייקון פרסמו את רעיונותיהם לגבי האנושות והחברה.
