English Channel

The English Channel (, "the sleeve") is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean that separates the island of Great Britain from northern France and joins the North Sea to the Atlantic. It is about 562 km (350 miles) long and varies in width from 240 km (150 miles) at its widest to only 34 km (21 miles) in the Strait of Dover. It is the smallest of the shallow seas around the continental shelf of Europe, covering an area of only some 75,000 km² (29,000 square miles).

La Manche est une mer épicontinentale de l'océan Atlantique, située dans le nord-ouest de l'Europe, et qui s'étend sur une superficie d'environ ; longue de 500 km, large de 250 km (au maximum) et profonde de 172 m en son point le plus bas. La Manche orientale constitue avec le détroit du Pas de Calais l'une des zones maritimes les plus fréquentées du globe. Dans sa partie septentrionale (Pas de Calais), en raison des courants parmi les plus importants au monde, l'eau est très turbide, mais en restant oxygénée.

Der zum Atlantik gehörende Ärmelkanal (englisch English Channel, französisch La Manche) verbindet diesen über die Straße von Dover mit der  Nordsee, einem seiner Randmeere. Der Ärmelkanal liegt zwischen Frankreich im Süden und Großbritannien im Norden. Im Kanal liegen die britischen Kanalinseln und die Insel Wight, die von einem Seitenarm, dem Solent, umschlossen wird. Der größte Fluss, der in den Kanal mündet, ist die Seine. Bekannte Städte am Kanal sind Le Havre (Frankreich), Southampton und Plymouth (beide Großbritannien).

Kanał La Manche (od fr. La Manche – rękaw; po  angielsku jego nazwa brzmi English Channel czyli Kanał Angielski) – kanał morski oddzielający Wielką Brytanię od kontynentalnej części Europy. Po stronie kontynentalnej położona jest Francja. Poprzez Cieśninę Kaletańską łączy Morze Północne z otwartymi wodami Oceanu Atlantyckiego.

La Manica (in inglese English Channel, in francese La Manche) è un canale naturale che separa l'isola della Gran Bretagna dalla Francia settentrionale, ed unisce il Mare del Nord all'Oceano Atlantico; lungo circa 560 km e con una larghezza massima di 240 km. Lo Stretto di Dover è invece il punto più stretto, solo 34 km, da Dover a Cap Gris-Nez.
